Space Voyage at St Albans Cathedral
On Wednesday 30th October a group of Summit Students and Staff attended the ‘Space Voyage’ exhibition at St Albans Cathedral to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing.
The exhibition started with an impressive projection against the backdrop of the Cathedral outside. 10 minutes of a light display proceeded with a story of the journey in to space to the Milky Way and back along with projections of stars, space crafts and colourful shapes. The display was also accompanied by a dramatic ensemble of music and the atmosphere was fantastic. It was even more impressive due to the weather being a crisp evening and therefore a clear sky above.
Following the outside projection segment the group entered the Cathedral nave to the next section of the space journey. Here there were different areas including a projection of a television depicting the story of the landing on the moon, a sensory area including a change to stand on a ‘space mat’ said to replicate the feel of standing on the moon. There was also another colourful light display to music that proved popular with Students who were fixated on the shapes and colours produced.
The trail then entered the next phase where more light displays were shown and information about the landing expanded further. Finally concluding with a model rocket on display and the chance to enjoy a hot drink and snack in the cafe.
Students and Staff thoroughly enjoyed the trip and the exhibition was accessible to all. The sensory elements complimented all of the information shown and made the exhibition interactive and educational!
